Double
Date (500 points)
Aragorn,
King Elessar, Armoured Horse
Arwen
Undomiel, Asfaloth, Elven Cloak
Faramir,
Captain of Gondor, Armoured Horse, Bow, Lance, Shield, Heavy Armour
Eowyn,
Shield Maiden of Rohan, Shield, Horse, Throwing Spears
495
points (there is nothing else I can add to make up those last 5 points!)
Dan: The
theme of this list is pretty obvious, it’s a double date between Aragorn and
Arwen, Faramir and Eowyn after the events of the Return of the King. Who knows
what these 4 would likely get up to on a double date! Maybe going for a
romantic stroll (Reconnoitre), finding secluded woods to make out in (Fog of
War) or just happily kicking some Orc butt (basically all of them). Whatever they
get up to, with buckets of Might at their disposal there won’t be a huge amount
that can really stop them. Chaining Heroic Combats and making sure they get
their cavalry charges will be important, as will making sure they aren’t
surrounded and bogged down. At the 500 point level there won’t be that many
threats equal to these 4 about so they might even have a chance at winning a
game or two! For extra hilarity, up the points limit to 600, add in Denethor and
Arathorn and rename the list to “Meet the Parents”. 😅

Cirith Ungol (500 Points)
Shelob
Shagrat (Leader)
7 Mordor Uruk Hai
3 Mordor Uruk Hai with Two-Handed Mace
Gorbag (Wishes he was the Leader)
6 Orc Warriors
4 Orc Warriors with Spear
2 Orc Warriors with Two-Handed Weapons
Orc Captain
2 Orc Warriors
Moror Uruk Hai Captain
Dave: Just in case it wasn't immediately obvious, the theme of
this list is Cirith Ungol, with particular focus on “The Fighting Pits”, and
that really cool bit in the film where Shagrat and Gorbag are arguing over the
Mithril Coat. Shagrat boots Gorbag down the ladder, and Gorbag
proceeds to drop kick a black Uruk out of existence.
Trying to maintain the theme, I've kept them all armed as
you'd have seen the in the film, with the exception of a few spears in with the
Orcs. In particular, I've chosen not to use the absolute gem of an upgrade that
is the Shield of Cirith Ungol for Shagrat, opting instead to use him completely
stock (the classic model where he's holding onto the Mithril Coat) this
particular model is also lacking Heavy Armour, so we've kept that off too.
Shagrat is being joined by a bunch of Mordor Uruk Hai,
they pack a bit more punch that the Orcs in the list, so the certainly make
Shagrat's warband pretty scary, but again, no shields since they weren't
holding them in that scene, as far as I could tell!
Gorbag and his Orcs are in the same boat, no shields, and
ready for the fighting pits. The 2 generic
captains are mostly there to fill out some points, but I like to imagine
they're waiting to around to see who dies so they can feed them to “Her”.
And who is she? Why, it's Shelob of course! Can't have
Cirith Ungol with out Her Ladyship herself! She's pretty self explanatory, big
gribbly, likes to shoot webs and eat people. Nice lass, really. I have visions of this list one day making it to the
table, but playing the Orcs and Uruk Hai as too resentful of each other to help each
other out... After all, what Uruk Hai would want spear support from “Orc Scum”!
The Last Alliance of Men and Elves (700 Points)
Elendil, High King of Gondor and Arnor
4 Warriors of Numenor with Shield.
4 Warriors of Numenor with Shield and Spear.
Isildur
4 Warriors of Numenor with Shield.
4 Warriors of Numenor with Shield and Spear.
Gil-Galad, King of the Elves
7 Kings Guard
700 Points
Dave: I'm going to start this by saying, for such a simple
concept to a list, I absolutely fell in love with it whilst writing it. It's so
basic, but it captures such a great part of Middle Earth history, the Last
Alliance of Men and Elves, and the defeat of Sauron!
Whilst Rivendell offers up a host of exciting warriors
and heroes for us to choose from, there's only really two I even considered for
this: Gil-Galad and Lord Elrond. If you ever feel like taking it for a
spin, the two heroes are completely interchangeable (aside from the access to Kings
Guard) but you'll be able to bag yourself an extra Elf for the saving you'll
make from taking Elrond instead of Gil-Galad. For me, the choice was obvious, it had to be the High King of the Elves
himself. You know he's good and you know he's got an obnoxiously high Fight Value. AND he allows you to upgrade your High Elf Warriors to
Kings Guard, buffing their Fight Value too, but also adding in an extra bit of
flavour to the notion that this is part of the front lines in the fight against
Sauron. I've opted for no shields or spears, and you better believe I'm going
Two-Handed most of the time in hope of recreating the awesome bit of the first
film where you see them spinning their blades around, slicing anyone who comes
into their reach!
I couldn't take the King of the Elves without taking the
King of Men, Elendil. He's absolutely no slouch, and looking at his profile,
it's clear Sauron got in a lucky shot when he knocked him down. Rocking up with Narsil, a Master Forged Hand and a Half sword,
that grants a free Heroic Combat each turn, Elendil can make short work of Orcs
of any kind. If that wasn't enough, he's backed up by a small retinue of 8
Warriors of Numenor armed with Swords and Spears, 4 of each.
Isildur, much like his Father, can certainly hold his own
in combat too. We've not given him the One Ring, as thematically, it's still on
the finger of Sauron. Like his Father, his retinue of 8 Warriors is 4 Sword and
4 Spear.
I can't see any other way to play this list than just
rocking it all up as one big line, Gil-Galad lined up in amongst his Kings
Guard, and Elendil and Isildur leading their charge from the front. Is it the
optimal way to play? Probably not, but that's not what this is about!

Dan: This
list was inspired by the second place list in our recent review of the Beaconsof Chester Top 5. I like to think of it as being like the evil Avengers; a
motley group with different skills and abilities fighting together to prove
once and for all that nice guys finish last. We’ve got our Captain America (The
Witch King), a good fighter with the 'Will' to get things done. Our Iron Man
(Gothmog) can adapt to all sorts of situations (Master of Battle). Black
Panther (Amdur) will use his superior combat skills (free heroic combat if they
call one) and shiny armour to deal with enemy heroes. Hawkeye has a bow (so I
guess that makes him Suladan) but is also no slouch in hand to hand combat.
Black Widow (Mahud King) is easily underestimated but punches surprisingly hard
(War Camel). And finally Hulk just wants to smash (Khandish King on Chariot).
Now
that we’ve stretched that metaphor beyond all reason, each of these pieces does
genuinely bring something pretty unique. Whether it’s Magic, free heroics,
poisoned weapons or impact hits, there are a lot of tools in this list. Granted
at 800 points you are going to see a lot of other big threats around but
hopefully one or more of these models could team up and deal with them. Just
like with my Double Date list, you can’t afford to get bogged down so clever play will
be essential and the scenarios will play a large part in how successful you can be. However, I do genuinely think this would be a blast to play with and would look
awesome on the table! (Avengers repaints are optional but encouraged).
